Mandarin is a leading provider of library catalog and circulation software for K-12 schools across the country. The software is built for librarians, by librarians, and allows customers to have complete management over their libraries and allows patrons to find books and items on the shelves.
With new competitors entering the market, Mandarin’s product was quickly falling behind with its existing user interface design. Mandarin stakeholders engaged D+i to develop a complete design overhaul of the catalog interface and elevate the application above the new competition.
Our engagement began with a complete audit of the existing application and interviews with librarian users. We collaborated with client stakeholders to map out user personas, user stories and essential workflows to gain complete understanding of how library patrons were using the application. We quickly realized that the catalog search was lacking many of the best-practice search UI of commonly used search engines for both book and product.
Our team created wireframe prototypes to explore revamping the catalog search and exploring user workflows for finding, reviewing and checking out library items. The new design allowed for school customizations and provided the patrons a beautifully simple interface for enhanced search functionality. Today, our team continues to work with Mandarin stakeholders to explore new interface concepts for specific user personas and ages.
